Artist's Statement
Aodán Feeney's work is autobiographical and seeks to examine the familiar and the familial, but filtered through a fragmentary and elliptical approach. Piecing together multiple photographs he takes as reference, Aodán aims to compose a narrative that explores the relationships and moments of emotional recall that have shaped who he is. He transforms this source material in the painting process, choosing what elements to depict, alter or withhold. His compositions evolve organically, with elements appearing and disappearing before the final arrangement is revealed. Taken together, these pieces constitute a visual autobiography. Aodán layers highly realistic features with more gestural brush strokes and bold colour to convey emotion and the materiality of the medium.
