Artist's Statement

Aodán Feeney's work is autobiographical and seeks to examine the familiar and the familial, but filtered through a fragmentary and elliptical approach. Piecing together multiple photographs he takes as reference, Aodán aims to compose a narrative that explores the relationships and moments of emotional recall that have shaped who he is. He transforms this source material in the painting process, choosing what elements to depict, alter or withhold. His compositions evolve organically, with elements appearing and disappearing before the final arrangement is revealed. Taken together, these pieces constitute a visual autobiography. Aodán layers highly realistic features with more gestural brush strokes and bold colour to convey emotion and the materiality of the medium.

Aodán Feeney (b.1986) is an emerging self-taught figurative painter from Galway. His work evokes a sense of introspection and emotional intensity.

He was recently awarded an Arts Council Agility Award (2023), providing him with dedicated time to focus on developing a new body of work. In addition to this, Aodán was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Zurich Portrait Prize 2022, as well as exhibiting his works in the RHA Annual Exhibition, Outset Gallery, Courthouse Gallery and various other group exhibitions throughout the country.

Currently residing and working in Galway, Aodán continues to delve into the realms of the human experience through his captivating brushstrokes and compelling compositions. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to honing his skills shine through in every piece he creates.

Recent shows include RHA Annual Exhibition (2020), Cairde Visual (2019), Kerry Visual Artist Showcase (2019), September Group Show, Claremorris Gallery Mayo (2018), Hermione, Curated by Aisling Prior (2018), Claremorris Open Exhibition, Curated by Tom Morton (2017), VUE Art Fair at the RHA with Claremorris Gallery (2017), Boyle Arts Festival (2017), and the 9 Walls Exhibition (2017) at the Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo.
