Artist's Statement
This illustration is inspired by a photograph of a young girl taken by the Palestinian photographer Fadi A Thabet. The background is inspired by the poem 'If I Must Die' by the renowned, deceased Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer.
Artist's Biography
Anne-Marie Farrell is an Irish Illustrator who studied Visual Communications, graduating in 2002. Her work is figurative in style and focuses primarily on people, expressions and emotions. She illustrates traditionally, using coloured pencils, crayons and conté.
Since November 2023 her work has been a response to the horrors pouring out of Gaza. What began as a single portrait of Motaz Azaiza has become a body of over 150 illustrations, aiming to amplify the voices and stories of Palestinians and to stand in solidarity with them.
About Irish Visual Artists for Gaza
Irish Visual Artists for Gaza is a non-profit collective of over 100 Irish visual artists, designers and artisans who fundraise to provide aid for displaced families and orphans in Gaza. They have raised significant funds through various initiatives, such as prize draws with donated artwork, and collaborate with ground-level partners like Gaza go Bragh and TEA Collective. The group emphasises the power of art to raise awareness and support solidarity with Palestine.
