Artist's Statement
Melaugh is interested in the connection between identity, suppressed individuality and deceiving appearances. Drawing inspiration from poetry and literature, her work aims to present an altered version of reality and make reference to the notion of depersonalisation. The artist’s work makes use of memento mori and often hints at how pieces of oneself are at times patched up to create an alter ego in order to fit into today’s modern, image-based society. The use of dark tones throughout Melaugh’s work is instrumental in creating an eerie atmosphere where fragments of broken objects can be seen intertwined with desperate figures.
