Artist's Statement
For several years, my work has grappled with the following questions:
Why can't I escape the memories from the past? What does the past mean to me? What does it mean to be so fixated with and stuck in the past?
Unable to break the chain of fragments and scenarios from the past re-playing in my head, I explore the history of my homelands, and navigate my relationship to their landscapes in the hopes of 'releasing' it in the medium of oil paint. Painting acts as a vehicle through which I manifest the past into the present world, revive it, and bring it to an audience, inviting them to 'walk' through various hidden histories contained within each work, as well as introduce them to a landscape full of secrets and danger.
Working with the imagery of the natural landscape of my home country, Lithuania, and historical urbanscape photographs I have taken there, I bring its unique history and my personal memories to the present, reflected in the use of textured surfaces, heavy layers of paint and fluid, chaotic brushstrokes. The specifically prepared surfaces and thick paint, mixed from pigments, help me manifest the now intangible past into something material and real which has a distinct presence, a history that seduces the audience, encouraging them to come closer, touch it and get lost in the work itself.
