My images are of a universal landscape where a generic hybrid creature is central. By attempting to evolve allegorical concepts, the images I create celebrate the commonality between mankind and all other species - past, present and future.
From historic Lough Gur, Co. Limerick, Robert Ryan graduated from Limerick College of Art and Design in 1987. He has exhibited nationally and internationally since and his work is in a large number of prestigious public and private collections in Ireland and abroad.
At the very genesis of Ryan's work is a respect for a "universal creature". A lifelong passion for the natural world and travel has greatly informed his evocative images. Ryan borrows qualities from the European old masters but uses traditional painting characteristics in a post-modern context. Allegorical concepts such as solitude, the infinity of space and time, vulnerability and the fragility of life are explored in his work.
