Artist's Statement
There are painterly reasons for the Sea Head. It is a very direct, gestural and basic image. It has strong Cubist roots in circles and straight lines. Once I'd put it down on canvas it spoke back to me. The Sea Head, yes that looks like a painting by me and not at all like anyone else.
Biography
Tony 'Doc' Shiels (b.1938) is a Salford, Manchester-born artist, magician and writer.
He studied in Blackpool, then London and Paris, before moving to St. Ives, Cornwall in 1958. While based in St. Ives, he was made a member of the committee of the influential Penwith Society of Arts, ran the progressive Steps Gallery, and had a string of increasingly high-profile national and international exhibitions. Tony relocated to Ireland in the early 1990s, where he continued to write, paint and exhibit work.
In recent times, his lengthy artistic career has been the subject of a retrospective book, Tony Shiels: Third Generation St Ives (Auth: Steven Cousins, 2016), and an award-winning short documentary, Making Marks (Dir: Ben MacGregor, 2017).
Tony now lives and has his studio near Killarney in rural County Kerry.
Professionally made to a true museum-grade standard using pigment inks and acid-free fine art papers, our giclée prints boast extraordinarily rich detail, exquisite colours and an industry-best archival lifespan of up to 200 years.
