Artist's Statement
I found this scene near Smithfield Market in London. In general, I'm inclined to work on reducing compositions into simpler architectural forms. However, the contrasting black and white tiled floor and vivid architectural plants in this image jumped out as a ready-made composition. There was relatively little abstraction from the original photo capture.
Biography
After studying architecture at Nottingham University, Ross Cunningham has worked in the London creative industry for over twenty years, with a primary focus on identity design and architectural photography. Ross continues to work internationally, having returned to live in his native Belfast in 2016. In his painting practice, the commercial influences of a rigorous approach to composition are evident, along with the use of strong graphical elements. Pre-production workflow is often carried out digitally, using skills developed in commercial design practice.
