Artist's Statement
My paintings are built from layers — of colour, memory, and mark-making. At the heart of each piece are drawn lines that act like quiet connectors. They lead the eye, hold space, and often feel like a thread between one thought and the next.
You’ll also find small motifs and symbols throughout—hints of houses, objects, shapes—almost like a map legend. They’re personal references, drawn from everyday life, often tied to a place or time that’s meaningful to me. Some come from my children’s drawings, others from moments I’ve tried to hold onto. They don’t tell a single story, but together they build a sense of familiarity — even if you’re not quite sure why.
My palette shifts between soft, earthy tones and gentle pastels colours, chosen for how they feel. I want each piece to carry a mood, a sense of stillness, or sometimes a flicker of joy or longing.
Each piece is a layered record — not of one specific story, but of many quiet moments that overlap and accumulate, like the feeling of returning to a place you once knew.
I’m always thinking about what we remember, what fades, and what stays with us without us even noticing. My hope is that the work gives you space to pause — and maybe find a little piece of your own story inside it.
Biography
Paula McGurdy is a Dublin based artist who creates expressive, process-based abstract mixed media drawings. She received her BA in Fine Art Drawing at Camberwell College of Art, UAL, London, where she lived and worked for several years.
Her current work involves layered, gestural abstract painting with a focus on movement, colour and form. Having returned to Ireland a couple of years ago after living in London for 10 years, there was quite a substantial shift in her work, in terms of use of colour and paint. This latest series of work has been quite a cathartic process and is a reflection on the change of landscape, a sense of wandering, transience and belonging. She currently lives in Dublin, Ireland with her husband, and two young children.
Professionally made to a true museum-grade standard using pigment inks and acid-free fine art papers, our giclée prints boast extraordinarily rich detail, exquisite colours and an industry-best archival lifespan of up to 200 years.
