Artist's Statement
Olivia O'Dwyer is a painter based in the south-east of Ireland. Her paintings blend figuration, abstraction, and personal narrative, approached obliquely rather than directly. She places herself within reimagined domestic interiors that explore identity and her experience as a woman, addressing themes such as empty nest syndrome, ageing, and the friction between making art and managing everyday life. Memory runs through the work via dense, textured layers of paint, beneath which earlier, "failed" paintings are often still visible. The resulting paintings hold humour and unease in equal measure.
Biography
Olivia O'Dwyer was born in Limerick and now holds a studio in Wexford, Ireland. O'Dwyer's works were recently acquired by Wexford Council's Art Collection and Wexford Art Centre and are held in Suzhou, China, Kathmandu, Nepal, and many private collections. Recent solo shows include Seen and Unseen, The Lido Stores Margate, UK, 24; HomeBird, Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin, 24; and A Mind’s Eye, Kevin Kavanagh, 22. Invited group exhibitions include the upcoming Triangulation, Kunstraum M3, Berlin, Germany; Calling, Lido Stores, Margate, UK; Herman’s Auction House, Dublin (invited artist), 25/26; Right Here, Right Now, Rua Red Arts Centre, Dublin, 25; and Magic and Loss, at Kevin Kavanagh, 2024; the RHA Annual Exhibition, 2024; New Neighbours, a two-person show, South Tipperary Arts Centre, 2024. Residencies awarded include Uillinn Arts Centre, 26; SIM, Reykjavik, Iceland, 24; and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co. Monaghan, 22/23. She has been written about and reviewed by the VAI, RTÉ.ie, The Sunday Independent, and The Irish Times. She was awarded a Visual Arts Bursary in 2023; an Agility award in '22; and Artlinks bursaries in 20, 22, 23, 25, and 26.
