Artist's Statement
My primary focus lies in exploring the intricate interplay between the man-made and the natural. The relationship between human intervention and the surroundings is a recurring theme in my artistic practice that aims to encourage the audience to contemplate the potential consequences of unsustainable human intervention. Frequently commencing with mundane urban subjects, my work distils them to their bare essence, often yielding abstract forms.
Biography
Thomas Scerri (b.1990) is a Maltese artist living in Cork. He first pursued studies in Mechanical Engineering at MCAST and obtained a Higher National Diploma. He then decided to return to art and design and went on to study at the University of Malta, where he graduated with a BFA (Hons) and MFA in Digital Arts.
In addition to his academic background, Thomas worked in graphic design for several years. Combined with his background in engineering, this has influenced his work both in methodology as well as its aesthetic. His practice has evolved through various material choices, and currently focuses on sculpture and painting.
Over the past decade, he has exhibited his work extensively in Malta at leading galleries such as Palazzo De La Salle, Spazju Kreattiv, Lazuli, and Iniala 5. Internationally, he exhibited at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, France as well as at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen, Outset Gallery, Galway and the Lavit Gallery in Cork.
In 2018, he was awarded first prize in Shifting Contexts, a competition held at Spazju Kreattiv in collaboration with Agenzija Żgħażagħ. In 2021, his project titled Rooftops was awarded the project support grant by Arts Council Malta. And more recently, in 2023, Materja was nominated for the Premju għall-Arti by Arts Council Malta.
Professionally made to a true museum-grade standard using pigment inks and acid-free fine art papers, our giclée prints boast extraordinarily rich detail, exquisite colours and an industry-best archival lifespan of up to 200 years.
