My aunt, Laila Shawa, was a formative influence — her provocative, politically charged artworks opened my eyes to the power of the visual to confront silence, taboo, and oppression. These early experiences embedded in me an enduring desire to explore the intersections of the personal and political through art.

Working predominantly with the human figure, the subjects in my work have been my children, as well as the Israeli occupation and dystopian methods of surveillance against the Palestinians, and more recently, the destruction of Gaza. Most of my previous and ongoing works however, are fragmented self-portraits that depict the ongoing dialogue between multiple selves — real, idealised, suppressed, or evolving. The multiple figures employed in those paintings reflect the layered and fluid nature of identity and is an exploration of feminine subjectivity. Each figure embodies roles that women often navigate: muse, observer, sensual being, creator, thinker. These archetypes are not isolated; together they form a complex, relational identity. What does it mean to be so fixated with and stuck in the past?

Unable to break the chain of fragments and scenarios from the past re-playing in my head, I explore the history of my homelands, and navigate my relationship to their landscapes in the hopes of 'releasing' it in the medium of oil paint. Painting acts as a vehicle through which I manifest the past into the present world, revive it, and bring it to an audience, inviting them to 'walk' through various hidden histories contained within each work, as well as introduce them to a landscape full of secrets and danger.

Working with the imagery of the natural landscape of my home country, Lithuania, and historical urbanscape photographs I have taken there, I bring its unique history and my personal memories to the present, reflected in the use of textured surfaces, heavy layers of paint and fluid, chaotic brushstrokes. The specifically prepared surfaces and thick paint, mixed from pigments, help me manifest the now intangible past into something material and real which has a distinct presence, a history that seduces the audience, encouraging them to come closer, touch it and get lost in the work itself.

Biography

Juste Bernotaite is a Lithuanian painter based in Belfast. The source material is deconstructed, cropped, and layered using various processes including expanded printmaking, painting, digital and collage, sometimes in combination. This approach echoes the incongruous variety of online imagery and considers ‘slow’ processes such as drawing as an antithesis to the knee-jerk reactions and viral trends that are prevalent in today’s media landscape, in which images are consumed and discarded at an equal rate. One can learn an enormous amount about societies, including our present one, by studying and examining the built environment, its architecture, landscape planning, and the connection between physical space and social consequences. It not only refers to that which is built, arranged, or curated, but also to what is managed, controlled, or allowed to continue. What is referred to as ‘nature’ today can be seen as a commodity that is placed into an environment that is constructed to fulfil the human will and desire. Building construction is responsible for almost 40% of all global carbon emissions, a primary cause of climate change, far higher than any other individual sector.

Since 2015 my practice has focussed on painting, taking aspects of the built environment as its theme and inspiration. Initially I focussed almost entirely on the effects of technology on society as evidenced in the built environment.
Covid lockdown, and consequent physical restriction to my garden and local parks led me to focus on the intersection of the natural world with the built environment, and thence to the subject of climate change.

I create images by collecting a large archive of digital images–my own and found Creative Commons images on the internet. With these, I create digital collages in preparation for my paintings. These images distort spatial perspective and scale, colliding subjects that should not appear together in the same space. For example, in my recent body of work I place giant weeds and plant-life in dramatic church interiors, juxtaposing the ‘unruly’ structure of the plants and the order of the church architecture by playing with transparencies, light, colour, and perspective.

My paintings seek to enhance differences and at the same time merge/transpose elements across seemingly unrelated subjects.

Biography

Dave Madigan is a painter who works from Pallas Projects/Studios in the Digital Hub, Dublin.
