It is a very direct, gestural and basic image. It has strong Cubist roots in circles and straight lines. Once I'd put it down on canvas it spoke back to me. References to my grandfather’s experience of being in the army during World War II are evident in the form of numbers, dates and descriptions. My paintings utilise abstract and figurative elements to explore fragmented memories and emotions. The figures in my paintings are often blurred and merge into their surroundings, allowing the viewer to interpret the painting in relation to their own experience.
